Few series of crimes have been the subject of speculation in so many books. Perhaps the closely-knit and less sophisticated population of Stepney eighty years ago was more readily stimulated to mob activity by the fearful and the unknown. It is interesting to compare the lack of public interest aroused by the somewhat similar series of murders of nude prostitutes which occurred in West London in 1964. The Jack the Ripper murders in the East End of London in 1888 have never ceased to fascinate those who are concerned with crime writing. REVIEWS REVIEWS Jack the Ripper in Fact and Fiction. The book starts with a narrative of the successive murders and goes on to an analysis of both fictional and serious explanations of the crimes. Odell says that "People will continue to seek solutions to mysteries, and very often the simplest construction on what is known is the one that will have an eventual claim to reality."
